This post is going to be an ongoing collection of notes and supporting material based on my reading of “When the Church was Young,” by Marcellino D’Ambrosio. This has been a fantastic read with a great deal of information I don’t want to forget.
The era 100 to 800
The anti-Nicean fathers (wrote during the 300 years of persecution). The edict of Milan (31 AD) granted religious freedom in the Roman empire. The first ecumenical council of the Church – Council of Nicea (A.D. 325).
Apostolic Fathers
Church Fathers from time apostles were alive= Apostolic Fathers (A.D. 50 – A.D. 150).
The importance of these writers is hard to exaggerate. they help us identify both what eh apostles actually meant by what they wrote and also what the apostles orally taught but neglected to include in what came to be known as the New Testament writings.
